Monkeying around
I had a great week relaxing with a friend, now I need to get myself back in gear! Not my home, but Jacaranda trees are in bloom everywhere and gorgeous.
I know they are very messy, still wow. I'm tempted to guerrilla garden one into the empty planting space in the fire lane, so I can enjoy it and not clean up after it (much). The sunflowers have reached Jack & the Beanstalk heights! At least 10'. The goldfinches sit on the stems and rip at the leaves to eat.
We've had a week. Poor Doctor had a "winky" eye, so took him to see the vet. He had an ulcer removed, and is sporting an Elizabethan collar for a bit. Along with 2 different eyedrops several times a day. It's much better today, and he's getting back to normal - restless, and wanting outside. Sorry buddy. And I fell at the end of a run yesterday, hard on my knee & hands. I felt mostly fine, I mean it hurts to fall but I was o.k. and finished running home. Last night my knee was achey, so will try to lay low today. I checked on a cutting of Lophocereus Schottii 'Woolly Rhino' that's been sitting in the greenhouse for several months. Has it rooted? Success!
For now, in a pot to fatten up. Eventually I'd like to ground it.
Potted up a couple Aloes - Aloe Aculeata black clone form. For now, in a pot to fatten up. Eventually I'd like to ground it.
And Aloe Suzannae, I lost one before -they are a little fussy. Potting Miss. S to keep her happy.
Pedilanthus bracteatus has begun it's summer bloom. I've always read, water sparingly or not at all. Nope, she's thirsty. Much better bloom with a good weekly (or two) dousing of water, at least here in Livermore.
These sweet little Saxifrages. Saxifrage 'Vesna' *I think, tags got shuffled.
And Saxifrage 'Iris Pritchard' probably my favorite, I love how it grows in a nice little bun.
Desert rose Adenium is really putting on a show.
Millions of peaches, peaches for me. Not really - more like 12.
Fingers crossed on the Hakea petiolaris that Ivan replanted in the slope. I've had horrible luck with these, but there is some new growth?
Eremophila racemosa is off to a great start. I tried this plant once before, it was a total dud. This one has much better form, and the ever changing flower color. Pink/yellow/coral.
Warning:Flower dump. Scroll if you're not into it. Unknown- I thought I discarded this Dahlia, it must have planted itself by the back gate.and I love what it's doing there. Nice long stems, great cut flower.
Styrax 'Evening Light' hard to get a nice photo of, but the leaves are so nice. Second blooming.Russelia equisetiformis 'Aurea'
I do like a pom pom Dahlia.
And when the buds are still tightly formed.
Crinum
Lisianthus, one seed made it all the way!
No idea Dahlia, but nice & punchy.
Glad.
A maybe questionable color combination. lol
This succulent/daylily combo I like.
We've had a mild start to summer, for this area at least. 90's and upper 80's - I'll take it!
Happy 4th of July, the pre-fireworks around here have been pretty dang quiet. I'm thankful for that, we're just too dry for that kind of shenanigans. Doing anything fun of the 4th?
Falling hurts. I've done it a few times, and I feel for your knee. Can you bend it right now? I hope you heal up quickly.
ReplyDeleteElizabethan collar is a good description. But I'm partial to "cone of shame" a la "Up". Glad kitty is better.
Yes, thank you - it was not so bad I couldn't bend. It feels great today, just bruised! The cone of shame & sadness :)
DeleteYou've got a lot going on! Sorry about your fall and the Doctor's eye. (He looks a little put out.) Congrats on the Lisianthus! I'm envious of your sunflowers and your dahlias. I checked my seed hoard several weeks ago and discovered I had no sunflower seeds and I dithered about picking any up until I decided it's probably too late to start them. As I start my dahlias from tubers each year, they seem to take forever to reach bloom stage but hopefully that'll be a distant memory by August ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah you are right on - he is put out. One lisianthus, what a bugger to get from seed. lol No doubt your dahlias will be an explosion soon. And lovelier than the old ones I have hanging around.
DeleteYou have many enjoyable closeup pics this week.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anvil!
DeleteHope your knee heals fast and Doctor adjusts well! Your garden sounds wonderful, especially those impressive sunflowers. Your gardent looks beautiful. Happy 4th of July!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th! Thanks Jeff the Chef :)
DeleteYikes! I am glad your fall wasn't worse. That Russelia equisetiformis 'Aurea' is HOT!
ReplyDeleteI'm back in the saddle, just a bruise now. The Russelia is such a good reliable plant.
DeleteLove the jacarandas in bloom, hate them as street trees for narrow parkways! Lisianthus is crazy difficult from seed so congrats. I'm always confused about what pedilanthus I grow. I thought it was bracteatus too but looks different from yours, but then yours looks to be in a pot so who knows? Nice that you have a pool to baby that knee a bit.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm wondering if mine is bracteatus? I bought it labeled as that, but it could be macrocarpus. I thought they were more grey/blue and shorter. Who knows, lol. *I did stretch in the pool, I think it helped.
DeleteFirst off, your cat is absolutely adorable and looking very stylish in that … Elizabethan collar … 😂 I hope he doesn't mind it too much! And your garden is absolutely beautiful! I have such a hard time with plants. I love them, but I always kill them on accident!
ReplyDeleteI'll tell him you said so ;). Thank you!
DeleteOh, poor kitty...but I'm glad he's on the mend. You have so many wonderful highlights in your garden...gorgeous! First the Jacaranda and the Sunflowers are stunning. And the Daylilies, Dahlias, and Glads are so colorful! I love Lisianthus. And the succulents are wonderful, too. Beautiful post. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Beth :). Dr. is definitely feeling better and wanting out of the cone, lol. One more day before he gets his eye rechecked.
DeleteA pat for the Doc. Hope he is out and about soon.
ReplyDeleteI love pom pom dahlia, they are my favorite.
Happy Birthday America!!
Love, Carla
Jacaranda in full bloom is a sight to behold! Glorious though eventually messy: would be better in a large park where dropped blooms don't matter.
ReplyDeleteThe foliage on that Hakea petiolaris... be still my beating heart!
I'm so enamored by the Saxifrage on the rocks! LOVE it.

You and the cat both take it easy! Falls are funny, you don't feel the worst of it until later. I'm not doing anything for the 4th. Usually I can see the highest fireworks from the official show at the fair grounds from my house, so I'll watch that. And try to comfort the dog. He won't act up, he'll be too scared to do that. Wet the yard in the morning, since there are plenty of illegal fireworks around. Some are legal in OR, but not the high ones that shoot over houses.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeletePlease read my post
ReplyDeleteYikes, falls are never good. Take care! I enjoyed your jacaranda closeups. I've never see those trees in blooms and the pictures I've seen are far away/entire tree type photos. I would hate to have one of those trees on my property, but I love them in photos. I also enjoyed your succulents, as usual, and the juxtaposition with dahlias, daylilies and other flowers that can grow where I live was most interesting.
